Clwyd: I want to raise with you the question of Bradley Manning, the US marine, who at present is in a military prison – untried and unconvicted – and the treatment that has been given him. He has been kept in solitary confinement over the past ten months, he is denied access to the normal things that one has every day. He is made to stand naked outside his cell every morning and so on and so forth. And as you know, Hilary Clinton’s press spokesman has been forced to resign over the comments that he made over the treatment of Bradley Manning, calling it “counterproductive and stupid.”

Bradley Manning’s mother in Welsh, from Pembrokeshire. She has visited him recently and everyone is very concerned about his treatment. I wonder if you can raise it, or have raised it, because there is a lot of public interest in the treatment of Bradley Manning.

Hague: Well, on this particular case, Mr Manning’s lawyer apparently wrote on the 2nd February on his blog that “Mr. Manning does not hold a UK passport, nor does he consider himself a UK citizen.” Beyond that we can’t comment on an individual’s nationality without their consent. And in that situation, of course, our standing on this matter is limited. He is not asking for our help, nor considering himself British.

In general, conditions in US prisons do meet international standards. Solitary confinement is a procedure used in many countries. It is deemed to offer protection both to the inmate and those around them. It is for his legal representative to challenge his treatment, if they judge that his treatment fails to meet international standards.

The fact that it has been raised in this committee, of course, can be brought to the attention of the United States. So it can be, and will be. But our position, from a legal and a consular point of view is as I’ve just been describing.

Clwyd: Can I just say that his legal representative published an 11-page document a few days ago, which was a statement from Manning but also a complaint from his lawyer about his treatment. So as we are receiving letters from constituents on this particular subject, I will be coming back to you on this subject.

Hague: Well, do come back to me and of course I will write you a letter so you can correspond with your constituents.

CIA Spy (contractor) from Colorado goes abroad, lies, deceits and even kills civilians and "so what?"
Raymond A. Davis' story is apparently very unique since it would be abhorrent, to say the least , that CIA spies (and contractors) are authorized and even protected to do anything they feel like doing to, for and in these "weak countries".
On January 27, 2011, Raymond A. Davis , US national, shot dead two Pakistani civilians, Mohammad Faheem and Faizan Haider, on a busy Lahore thoroughfare, whom he claims were were about to rob him.

As a vehicle from the US consulate in Lahore tried to rescue Davis, it hit and killed a third person, Ebadur Rehman.
Davis shot the two men through his windshield with his 9mm Glock pistol and he even admitted that he fired at Faizan from the back.
After the shooting, Davis is alleged to have exited his car to take pictures and videos of his victims with his cell phone.
Davis attempted to escape the scene of the shooting in his vehicle but was apprehended by two traffic wardens and handed over to police.
On February 6, 2011, CNN reported that  Shumaila, the widow of Muhammad Faheem, committed suicide after taking poisonous pills.

According to hospital sources, Shumaila said: - "I was under shock". And she stated that she took poison because she was not expecting justice in Raymond Davis case and she feared Davis could be released without trial. After taking the poison pills she was rushed to the hospital but died on the same day.
On April 30, 2012, CNN reported that relatives of man killed by Davis were found dead:

Raymond is not being charged with espionage. He has been charged with two counts of murder and one of illegal weapon possession.
At the end of the day, Raymond is a very fortunate man, a non ordinary one, for sure.
He has diplomatic immunity - American Diplomatic Immunity. And in these "weak countries" , it looks like that acts like his are just "international embarrassments" to overcome.
Fortunately, Canada, besides being no small mice, is not Pakistan! They would NEVER, EVER do such brutal unsophisticated kind of things here !

Unethical, illegal, without knowledge or informed consent Human Experiments by American doctors:" shocking, it's tragic" ...

Wellesley College historian Susan Reverby, while going through the the archived records of a government researcher involved in the infamous Tuskegee study, discovered recently, that American doctor Dr. John Cutler led a project in Guatemala in which American doctors deliberately infected prisoners and patients in a mental hospital with syphilis and in some cases gonorrhea. A total of 696 men and women were exposed to syphilis.

In the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study, researchers recruited more than 350 impoverished African-Americans with syphilis for research related to the natural progression of the untreated disease.

The human experiments in Alabama, conducted between 1932 and 1972, were revealed only after Peter Buxtun, a PHS venereal-disease investigator finally went to the press in the early 1970's, after having expressed concerns about the ethics and morality of the extended Tuskegee Study as early as 1966.

The story broke first in the Washington Star on July, 2972.

In the case of the experiments in Guatemala, it took 60 years and a historian for the facts to come to light.

This is one more of the numerous human experiments the United States performed that have been considered unethical, often performed illegally, without knowledge let alone consent of the victims.

But they are sorry...

Abused Iraqi Prisoners Held at Abu Ghraib Never Received Compensation

The Associated Press has revealed that Army records show no Iraqi prisoners tortured at Abu Ghraib prison ever received compensation from the United States despite promises by former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. In 2004 Rumsfeld told Congress that he had found a legal way to compensate Iraqi prisoners who were abused. Rumsfeld said, "It’s the right thing to do. And it is my intention to see that we do." Six years later, no record of payment exists, and the Army cannot verify whether any such payments were made informally through Iraqi leaders. The news come as the Supreme Court is expected to decide this week whether to hear a lawsuit filed by former Abu Ghraib prisoners against two private companies: CACI International and L-3 Services, formerly Titan Corp.

The "Somalia Affair" (1993) Revisited

The Somalia Affair was a 1993 military scandal that was later dubbed "Canada's national shame".

Shidane Abukar Arone was a Somali teenager who was tortured and beaten to death by Canadian soldiers in the Canadian Base in Somalia, on 17 March 1993.

Arone was caught on March 16 attempting to steal supplies from the Canadian base. Two members of the Canadian Military Base, Master Corporal Clayton Matchee and Private Kyle Brown, bound Arone and tortured him over the next several hours. Ultimately, he died of his injuries.

While the military initially claimed Matchee and Brown had acted alone, it was later revealed that sixteen others had visited the tent while Arone was captive, including superior officers.

At first DND officials told the media that Arone had likely died from natural causes. It took several weeks for the Canadian people to become aware of the actual events in Somalia.

An inquiry officially known as The Somalia Commission of Inquiry began in 1994 after public outcry.

The military disengagement from accountability and evasion strategies permeated the inquiry where Air Force General Jean Boyle blamed his subordinates for wrong doing.

It ran until 1997 when it was cut short by the government in the months before the 1997 election.The inquiry was never able to examine top level governmental decision-making, nor did it actually examine the alleged events in Somalia.

"Conspicuously absent from the report is anything on the most sensitive aspect of the Somalia affair — the torture and murder of Shidane Arone."
