WHAT IS TORTURE? http://www.redress.org

Torture is universally accepted as:

"any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions".

(Article 1 of the United Nations Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment 1988).

Specifically, for an act to be considered as torture, all of the following elements must be present:
The act must have caused severe pain or suffering;

It must have been inflicted by or on behalf of or at the consent of a public official (such as the police or security forces);

It must have been committed for a specific purpose, such as to elicit a confession to a crime or to instil fear.

My Gramma wears a rainbow sweater,
She holds peaceful political views,
My Gramma like to rouse the masses,
She is sometimes on the news.

My Gramma cares about people,
She works for human rights,
My Gramma works to end all wars,
She works so we can sleep at night.

My Gramma follows a dream of peace,
She believes in non-violence,
My Gramma will risk her freedom for you,
She will always break her silence.

My Gramma opposes injustice,
She speaks for the poor and voiceless,
My Gramma believes we have enough to share,
She works to help the homeless.

My Gramma believes in the power of love,
She believes in sharing,
My Gramma works against racism and hatred,
She believes in caring.

My Gramma works for civil liberties,
She believes it is wrong to oppress,
My Gramma believes it is immoral to torture,
She believes we need to clean up this mess.

My Gramma cares about nature,
She has hugged a tree,
My Gramma wants clean water for everyone,
She wants a healthy earth for you and me.

My Gramma loves all of us children,
She dreams and works for our future,
My Gramma doesn't care who you are
She believes you deserve to be nurtured.

My Gramma marches for freedom,
She says we can make the world better,
My Gramma believes in dignity for all,
And, that is why - She wears a rainbow sweater.
