It tells the story of three Canadian men; Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad El Maati and Muayyed Nureddin who were detained and tortured for months and years in Syria and, in Ahmad El Maati's case, Egypt. Upon their release, they return to Canada and try to find answers to why they were detained in the first place. The role of the RCMP, CSIS and Department of Foreign Affairs in the torture of Canadians, s documented in Inquiries in Canada , is also exposed in this documentary.

The film also focuses on the effects of torture on the human mind and spirit.
