"Preachers of the world", just a piece of the story

Why I called Bradley Manning's treatment 'stupid

by PJ Crowley - Guardian UK - March 29, 2011

Full piece at:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2011/mar/29/bradley-manning-wikileaks

"As a public diplomat and (until recently) spokesman of the departmente od state, I was responsible for explaining the national security policy of the United States to the American people and populations abroad. I am also a retired military officer who has long believed that our civilian power must balance our military power."....

"Based on 30 years of government experience, if you have to explain why a guy is standing naked in the middle of a jail cell, you have a policy in need of urgent review. The Pentagon was quick to point out that no women were present when he did so, which is completely beside the point. "

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley calls treatment of Bradley Manning “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” | The Cable

""I spent 26 years in the air force. What is happening to Manning is ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid, and I don't know why the DoD is doing it. Nevertheless, Manning is in the right place." There are leaks everywhere in Washington - it's a town that can't keep a secret. But the scale is different. It was a colossal failure by the DoD to allow this mass of documents to be transported outside the network. Historically, someone has picked up a file of papers and passed it around - the information exposed is on one country or one subject. But this is a scale we've never seen before. If Julian Assange is right and we're in an era where there are no secrets, do we expect that people will release Google's search engine algorithms? The formula for Coca Cola? Some things are best kept secret. If we're negotiating between the Israelis and the Palestinians, there will be compromises that are hard for each side to sell to their people - there's a need for secrets."

No more "shame" - SEXING TORTURE

Sexing in the "slow torture", "no-touch": The torturer’s psyche and "protected umpunity"

"… But stripping is also sexually laden. It transposes sexual gestures, acts and innuendo from a strip club to the torture chamber. Thus sex is always present in the torture chamber whether the victim is a man or a woman. The sexing of torture is deeply grounded in the recesses of the torturer’s psyche.

Marnia Lazreg, Torture and the Twilight of Empire: From Algeria to Baghdad

"From 1950 to 1962, the CIA became involved in torture through a massive mind-control effort, with psychological warfare and secret research into human consciousness that reached a cost of a billion dollars annually – a veritable Manhattan Project of the mind.” This research produced “a new approach to torture that was psychological, not physical, perhaps best described as ‘no-touch torture.’“ It has also been referred to as “slow torture".

Alfred McCoy - "A Question Of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War To the War On Terror"

Sexing torture in the "stealth, "slow", "non touch" American Torture" hits the news and "SO WHAT?"

As torture, event after event, seems to be an integral part of American standard operating procedures and obviously goes unpunished in the United States, except for cases involving "few bad apples", an article on the "slow torture" of 22 year-old man accused of leaking documents:

The National Shame of the US Military's 'Slow Torture' of Bradley Manning

"... All right! Enough of the PR-flak Orwellian crap. Everyone with a modicum of sense knows why the Quantico jailers are stripping Bradley Manning. They are stripping him because they have the power to strip him and they want to strip him. And they know that the majority of Americans and the mainstream press don’t give a damn what happens to this young man.

A friend asked me, “Why don’t they just water-board him?” It’s simple: They would if they could, but they can’t. Manning is an American and he has advocates. They can’t get away with the sorts of torture we used in the past in places like the Philippines and Vietnam and that the French used during their war in Algeria. The French experience is broken down and analyzed by Marna Lazreg in her book cited above based on archival research, diaries and interviews with torturers.

But do not fear: Our very resourceful and secret CIA learned from the French and, over the years with your tax dollars, added their own research on the topic. Here’s Alfred McCoy from his great book A Question Of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War To the War On Terror:..."

ACTIVE DENIAL WEAPONS - Americans Using "PAIN RAY " in Afghanistan

Published on WIRED - DANGER ROOM - By Noah Shachtman - June 19, 2010
Article: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/06/u-s-testing-pain-ray-in-afghanistan/#ixzz0rV6jqaln

Pentagon’s "pain ray," is a directed energy weapon that creates an intense burning sensation theoretically designed to repel a potential enemy. For now, only a vehicle mounted version has come to public knowledge.

The Active Denial System, or ADS, uses directed energy — millimeter waves — and heats up the top layer of the skin. Although the Pentagon says it is specifically designed not to cause any injuries, such as burns, there have been several incidents of blistering. One of the few known being an incident that took place in April 2008 when the Air Force revealed that an airman taking part in a test of ADS had been injured severely enough to be treated at a burn center.

Can we imagine criminals or "out of control" Police Forces , getting a hold of these "very effective" Active Denial Weapons (a handheld version, of course)? I guess they could destroy even the Heath Care System of a country...THE VIDEO:

"Application of the microwave hearing technology could facilitate a private message transmission. It may be useful to provide a disruptive condition to a person not aware of the technology. Not only might it be disruptive to the sense of hearing, it could be psychologically devastating if one suddenly heard ‘voices within one’s head.’"

Voices in your head disturbing? Heck, yeah, considering it’s something most people associate with schizophrenia. The age-old question is whether such a weapon is possible. According to the report, it’s not only possible, it’s already been demonstrated in crude form:

The CIA and allies in the pursuit of methods to “induce brain concussion " - WIRED - May 11, 2010

On May 6, 2010, after a Freedom of Information Act request and 30 years after it was written, a 17-page document detailing the involvement of the Pentagon in the CIA’s infamous Cold War mind-control experiments was released.

The document , “Experimentation Programs conducted by the Department of Defense That Had CIA Sponsorship or Participation and That Involved the Administration to Human Subjects of Drugs Intended for Mind-Control or Behavior-Modification Purposes,” was prepared in 1977 by the General Counsel of the US Department of Defense.

Although most of the details of the CIA’s infamous mind-control experiments have been revealed in earlier CIA papers, the recent released documents details the involvement of the Department of Defense in the CIA projects.

The studies on to “induce brain concussion" were part of a project initially funded by the Navy and shortly thereafter transferred entirely to the CIA, because it involved “human experiments not easily justifiable on medical-therapeutic grounds.”

Sex Humiliation, Rape, Forced nudity, death threats ...Violence against women

International Women's Day is March 8, 2010

Violence Against Women includes, but is not limited to:

Sex humiliation, rape, forced nudity, death threats and more - these are not the CIA "enhanced interrogation techniques" but they , of course, RESSEMBLE them.

These "techniques" are being used by perpetrators of violence against weaker and helpless women anywhere, anytime; perpetrators come in all shapes and colors, they may look like ordinary people or non ordinary people. And RAPE is still RAPE , and violence, be it stealthy or not, is still violence and not "an ordinary" event.

True Stories of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - Kevin Dwyer and Jure Fiorillo

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

is a spin-off of Wolf's successful crime drama Law & Order. Maybe it is of great interest for the fans of late actor Jayne Mansfield, one of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 1950s, whose daughter Mariska Magdolina Hargitay , plays the role of a detective in the Manhattan SVU. Or maybe some of the stories based on true crimes are worthy reading. The book "True Stories of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", focuses on twenty-five of the scandalous true crimes that real detectives have grappled with- the facts behind the fictionalized stories on the phenomenally popular TV show.
In-depth accounts of some of the most monstrous offenses are recreated on the series, including the gripping story of Aileen Carol Wuornos , an American serial killer who became the tenth woman in the United States to be executed via lethal injection on October 9, 2002.
The collection of stories in the book, gives a glimpse of the real stories and real people behind some of the most notable, notorious, and gut wrenching cases of sexually-based crimes in recent history.
" Memo From The Dark Side" , the twentieth season premiere episode of the original series Law & Order, was inspired by Abu Ghraib scandal, the Torture memos and allegations of torture during USA's war on terror.

Some of these real stories and the real people involved:

1)Final interview of serial killer Aileen Carol Wuornos - executed on October 8, 2002:
In her final interview shortly before her execution she claimed that her mind was being attacked by "sonic pressure" to make her appear crazy. Prior to that she had accused the prison matrons of torturing her. She claimed overhearing conversations about "trying to get me so pushed over the brink by them I'd wind up committing suicide before the [execution]" and "wishing to rape me before execution." She also complained of strip searches, being handcuffed so tightly that her wrists bruised any time she left her cell, door kicking, frequent window checks by matrons and "cat calling ... in distaste and a pure hatred towards me." She also mentions a "the floor harassment" as no marks torture.

UN experts point to widespread use of secret detention linked to counter-terrorism

26 January 2010 - Human Rights Council in Geneva

Despite the fact that international law clearly prohibits secret detention, the practice is widespread and “reinvigorated” by the so-called global war on terror, several independent United Nations experts stated, outlining a series of steps aimed at curbing this human rights violation.

In a 222-page study which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March, the experts conclude that “secret detention is irreconcilably in violation of international human rights law including during states of emergency and armed conflict. Likewise, it is in violation of international humanitarian law during any form of armed conflict.

“If resorted to in a widespread or systematic manner, secret detention might reach the threshold of a crime against humanity,” add the authors – the UN experts on counter-terrorism and torture, and the two UN expert bodies on arbitrary detention and enforced or involuntary disappearances.

The study, which took almost a year to complete, involves responses from 44 States to a detailed questionnaire, as well as interviews with 30 individuals – or their family members or their legal counsel – who were victims of secret detention, and in many cases may also have been subjected to torture.

It provides an historical overview of the use of secret detention, noting that it is not a new phenomenon in the context of counter-terrorism. From the Nazi regime to the former USSR with its Gulag system of forced labour camps, States have often resorted to secret detention to silence opposition, according to the report.

The study goes on to address the use of secret detention in the context of the ‘global war on terror’ following the events of 11 September 2001, describing “the progressive and determined elaboration of a comprehensive and coordinated system of secret detention” of persons suspected of terrorism, involving not only United States authorities, but also other States in almost all regions of the world.

It also highlights that secret detention in connection with counter-terrorism policies remains a serious problem on a global scale, either through the use of secret detention facilities; through declarations of a state of emergency, which allow prolonged secret detention; or through forms of “administrative detention,” which also allow prolonged secret detention.

The experts reiterate that international law clearly prohibits secret detention, which violates a number of human rights and humanitarian law norms that may not be derogated from under any circumstances.

“However, in spite of these unequivocal norms, the practice of secret detention in the context of countering terrorism is widespread and has been reinvigorated by the so-called global war on terror,” states the report, adding that many States, referring to national security concerns – often perceived or presented as unprecedented emergencies or threats – resort to secret detention.

Among their recommendations to address this serious human rights violation, the experts call for explicitly prohibiting secret detention, along with all other forms of unofficial detention. They also urged that safeguards for persons deprived of their liberty be fully respected, and that timely action be taken to ensure that immediate families of those detained are informed of their relatives’ capture, location, legal status and health condition.

The experts also point out that in almost no recent cases have there been any judicial investigations into allegations of secret detention and practically no one has been brought to justice.

“Although many victims feel that the secret detention has ‘stolen’ years of their lives and left indelible traces, often in terms of loss of their jobs and frequently their health, they almost never received any form of reparation, including rehabilitation or compensation.”

Therefore, the experts also recommend a number of steps to provide judicial remedies, reparations and rehabilitation to victims, and in some cases to their families.

The study was issued by the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism, Martin Scheinin; Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Manfred Nowak; the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (represented by its Vice-Chairperson, Shaheen Sardar Ali); and the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (represented by its Chairperson, Jeremy Sarkin).

Working in an independent and unpaid capacity, they all are appointed by, and report to, the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.
